If possible, I always like to have a couple of trips in the pipeline that are either booked or being planned. At the moment we actually have 3 confirmed trips –
This is the 4th iteration of the village idiots dads weekend away having already been to Krakow, Budapest and Tallinn. Numbers have grown from the initial 6 dads for Krakow to 10 for Lisbon.
10 feels like a lot of people to move around so it has been tricky to plan but I feel I’ve got a decent itinerary lined up for them. The weekend we are going isn’t during the international football break so I was fairly confident that either Benfica or Sporting would be at home meaning we could look to take in a game.
The fixtures came out and it’s Benfica v Vitoria Guimaraes the weekend we are but the TV gods have decided the game will be on Sunday when we are coming home, so that’s that…the wait for another overseas match goes on…
A surprise trip away for us all for my wife’s 50th. It’s not been particularly straightforward so far. I spent too much time looking into options for Christmas Markets in Europe. Poland offered up more choices and not crazy flight prices. On top of that i’m a big fan of the country and my daughter is currently learning Polish off one of her school friends. After i’d discounted Krakow (5 times so far and very expensive flights) and a few others – next time Lublin and Poznan, I started looking at flights to Wroclaw.
I actually went to Wroclaw about 20 years ago, and was looking at other options rather than go back to a place i’d been to previously. On reflection, when I went before it was with the lads and so can’t really remember much about it, which kind of means I’ve not really been before.
Stansted and Luton are about the same distance and at the time the Stansted flights were quite a bit more and the fact I also had a parking voucher for Luton after getting my dates wrong for Lisbon(!) I went with Luton. I went a bit leftfield as the kids have a teacher training day on the first Friday of December so we are flying out late Thursday evening til Sunday. The bonus being just 1 days A/L needed as well!
Wizzair and Ryanair were the options and it worked out cheaper for us to fly out with Wizz (but 2 separate booking 1 adult and child (inc 1 20kg bag) and 2 adults (inc 1 20kg bag). I did the math and it was worth it…
Luckily the flight back from Wroclaw to Luton wasn’t as complicated to book.
I’ve since had a notification from Wizz that our flight has been moved from Thursday evening to Wednesday evening which doesn’t really work. I’ve requested a refund and got the money back as Wizz credits :-(. There is an option to actually get it refunded back as cash which is pretty hard to find on their website so here it is – https://www.wizzair.com/en-gb/wizz-credit-conversion-request
I then needed to sort flights out to Poland (again). Naturally the Stansted flights were now rock bottom…I did look at switching the Wroclaw-Luton to fly us back into Stansted but that would have cost around £160 and i’d need to sort parking out so probably around £250 to sort it all out. After several hours of looking at the various options I booked Ryanair from Luton which cost me around £360 for 4 with selected seats and 2 bags, but with the Wizz money coming back the additional cost is around £160. We do fly an hour earlier than the Wizz flight was scheduled for so every cloud…
